What this Module Involves

This module first covers the essential physiology of the endocrine system. We cover the different endocrine glands in turn, covering the main hormone they produce and what parameter this controls. The next section involves going through the different drugs which affect the various hormones e.g. diabetic drugs, thyroid drugs, steroids and drug affecting adrenal gland and pituitary gland. We then go through the different tests and investigations used in endocrinology before going through the main endocrine conditions.

Section 1:

This starts with an overview of the main endocrine glands e.g. the pancreas and insulin, the thyroid gland, parathyroid and finally the adrenal and pituitary gland. We see how each hormone is controlled in negative feedback loops which is essential to keep physiological parameters in close control. We learn the functions of each hormone.

Section 2: pharmacology

This first covers the main drugs used to treat diabetes – we go through the different types of insulin and then the medicines used in the treatment of type II diabetes. We then go through the drugs affecting each hormone: thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pituitary explaining mechanism of action and side effects.

Section 3: Tests and investigations

This looks at the main tests  used to diagnose diabetes. We explain what each test looks for, key cut off values  and importantly some of the limitations of these tests which might give false positives/negatives. We also look at the various thyroid functions tests and what conditions give certain findings.

Section 4:

This goes through type I and II diabetes: symptoms, management and important complications. We then look at hypo/hyperthyroidism and cancers, before exploring the various types of adrenal and pituitary gland pathologies, with a structured approach focussing on aetiology, symptoms and finally treatment.
